December 13th
First of all, everyone at the club wishes George Mirijanian a speedy recovery. George was taken to the emergency room Wednesday with a rapid heartbeat, but has not had a recurrence. He is currently down in Worcester for observation and more advanced tests. He will hopefully be home by Saturday morning (December 16th).
George is the one who has made this club possible for many, many years. Best of luck George! Do whatever you need to do to get healthy. We all look forward to seeing you healthy again soon.

As a result of receiving a 1/2-point bye for last week's first round, he starts the tournament just a 1/2-point behind undefeated leaders Martin Laine and Ken Gurge. 2006 Wachusett Chess Club Championship Round 6 (of 7)
"A" Division
Last year's co-champions George Mirijanian and Bruce Felton played tonight and George scored a win with the white pieces. George can clinch the club championship next week with a draw, but he'll have black against the club's highest rated player - Parker Montgomery! At the same time, last year's co-champion, Bruce Felton will have white against the lowest rated player in the group! A win by Bruce combined with a loss by George would result in Bruce being co-champion once again! The same is true for George O'Rourke who is tied for 2nd place with Bruce. It's entirely possible that we could end up with 3 co-champions this year which would be a first in club history!
(*) Tom Fratturelli and Parker Montgomery each have a week to make up.
"B" Division With their wins this week, Gary Brassard and Paul Giovino have moved into a tie for 1st place.

Dr.
Max Levinger Memorial Congratulations to Martin Laine of Lunenburg and Bruce Felton of Fitchburg who finished tied for first place in the Dr. Max Levinger Memorial Tournament. Congratulations also to George Mirijanian of Fitchburg and Dave Couture of Westminster who finished tied for third. Note from George Mirijanian:
Dr.
Max Levinger (July 9, 1894 - March 1973) was one of the most colorful
characters in the history of the Wachusett Chess Club. He was a charter
member of the club when it became officially the Wachusett Chess Club in
February 1960 and met at the Veterans of Foreign Wars building on Pleasant
Street in Fitchburg. When I joined the club in the late 1950s before it
adopted its current name, Dr. Levinger was a club regular who insisted on
playing with his set. His set, however, had a missing black pawn. But the
good doctor's solution was to use a black cap from a medicine bottle as a
substitute! Some of the club players, including me, played extra games on
Friday nights at Dr. Levinger's office in downtown Fitchburg. I remember
playing on his desk and also on his examining table when his desk was
occupied by other club members. We played into the wee hours of Saturday
morning. Dr. Levinger never wanted us to leave until he had beaten us. He
didn't like to lose and when he did, you had to play him again and again. I
have very fond memories of Dr. Levinger, the likes of which the club will
never see again.

Biglow received a half-point bye. Paul Giovino, Angel Soto and Reggie Boone

Dr.

Note from George Mirijanian:
USCF
life member Edward D.W. Goguen, 80, of Endwell, NY, visited the club on
March 22. He was a former resident of Fitchburg and was president of the
Wachusett Chess Club about 45 years ago. A retired IBM employee, he has been
resident of New York state since 1963 but has made it a point to visit the
Wachusett CC every time he has come back to the area to see family members
and friends. We always enjoy his visits, as he has great stories about the
club dating back to the late 1950s and early '60s.

January 11, 2006 Congratulations to George O'Rourke of Concord, who won the Eli L. Bourdon Memorial time-handicap tournament with a score of 4.5-0.5 in a field of 12 players. The surprise second-place finisher was Caleb Comptois of Hubbardston, who was initially ranked 11th but ended up with a 4-1 tally after beating much higher-rated opponents in the final four rounds. Bruce Felton of Fitchburg captured third place with a score of 3.5-1.5, including a draw with tournament winner O'Rourke in the third round. The tournament honored the memory of Eli L. Bourdon (1907-1980) of Holyoke, who died 26 years ago this month. January 1, 2006 In the chess column of today's Worcester "Sunday Telegram", Stephen Dann writes about the namesake of the previous tournament, George Sturgis. "George Sturgis of Weston, who died in 1944, was a founder of the U. S. Chess Federation and president from its formation in 1939 until his passing. He was a nephew of the Spanish philosopher George Santayana and worked as an investment broker in Boston. He was an early promoter of scholastic chess and brought chess to the Boston City Club, a center of high society in the early to mid 1900s." Dann continues, "The Wachusett Chess Club will next honor Reggie Boone (see Tribute Page) of Gardner, who will turn 80 this month with a five-round event starting at 7:30 P.M. (NOTE: Registration ends at 7:15) Jan 18 at room C-179 of the McKay Campus School, Rindge Road in Fitchburg. Boone is the oldest club member, according to club director, George Mirijanian."
